Work for the crew in the blue shirts.

Colonial Lawn & Garden invites people who want to work alongside lawn-care professionals to apply. The company describes its shop as goal-focused and performance-driven, fast-paced and fun, and it hires for work that runs from the Yakima valley down to the Tri-Cities.

The work, by title

Four kinds of work on the Colonial roster.

This is what the roster and the service pages describe, not a list of open positions. Call or email either office to ask what is open.

  1. 01

    Lawn care and spray technicians

Fertilizer and weed-control applications, grub and insect control, and perimeter pest spraying around foundations, eaves and doors. Colonial lists lawn care technicians in both Yakima and the Tri-Cities, and prints a WSDA applicator licence number beside several of them.

  2. 02

    Irrigation

Spring start-up, the seven system checks through the season and fall winterization, with sprinkler repair and installation listed among the additional services.

  3. 03

    Maintenance crews

Mowing, edging, shrub trimming and aeration for homes and commercial properties. Colonial also services customers' lawn and snow equipment from November through February.

  4. 04

    Office and client services

Office management, accounts receivable, executive assistance, client services and sales, split across the Yakima and Tri-Cities offices. These are the people who answer when a customer calls.

The uniform

The shirt is part of the job.

Colonial has put its crews in matching uniforms since the first season in 1985: green shirts and hats at first, then blue button-downs, with charcoal pants added later. As Lawn & Landscape reported in 2015, lawn care and spray crews wear long sleeves, and maintenance crews wear short sleeves unless they are pruning.

“Internally, I think it gives us a sense of team. We’re all on the same team; we’re all wearing the same uniforms.”

Lance Forsee, president · Lawn & Landscape, December 2, 2015

In 2015 the in-season crew ran 25 to 35 people. The story behind the blue is on the about page.
