Sprinkler system maintenance: seven checks from start-up to blow-out

A technician visits seven times a season, turning the system on in spring, checking it through summer and winterizing it in fall.

Chapter 01

What goes wrong in a sprinkler season

Most sprinkler trouble is quiet. A head gets knocked out of line by a mower, a zone keeps running on its summer settings after the weather has turned. The lawn tells you weeks later, in a brown patch or a soggy corner. Getting the right amount of water is the difference between plants that ride out a dry spell and plants that give in to it.

The two bad moments bracket the season. Turned on wrong in spring, a system can burst components, because it is not like opening a kitchen tap. Left with a little water in the lines in fall, it can freeze, and that small amount of water can mean thousands of dollars in damage by spring.

Seven checks, start-up to winterization

A Colonial technician comes to the property seven times a season. The first visit is spring start-up and the last is fall winterization, when the lines are blown out so the water is purged before the freeze. The visits in between are in-season checks to confirm every zone is working.

Spring start-up confirms the system is not only on but running in good condition, so the lawn and beds get proper irrigation from the first week of the season. Winterization closes the loop in fall, with the lines blown out by a technician trained to do it right.

Each visit includes a look at the watering schedule, which gets adjusted as the season's demands change. Because the checks are spread through the season, small problems are caught and repaired early instead of arriving as one large one.
