Aeration, dethatching and the rest of the yard
The jobs that sit between the regular visits: core aeration, dethatching, top dressing and overseeding, sprinkler systems, pruning and landscape enhancements.
Chapter 01
Aeration and dethatching, the work at soil level
Core aeration is a machine pulling plugs of soil, thatch and grass out of the ground. You have probably seen the plugs scattered across a public lawn or a neighbor's yard. Colonial does it once a year, usually in spring or fall. The holes open pathways for water, fertilizer and air, open up the thatch layer, and help water stop pooling when the sprinklers run or after a heavy rain. It matters most where the soil is compacted, poor or heavy with clay, or has taken years of foot traffic and equipment. The plugs break down on the lawn afterward, spreading nutrients and microbes more evenly and helping to break down the thatch layer.
Thatch is the layer of roots, dead grass shoots and stems resting on top of the soil. Too much of it keeps fertilizer, water and air from the roots. Colonial's technicians thin it out by power raking.

Top dressing and overseeding for a lawn gone thin
For top dressing, technicians spread an organic compost over the lawn. Colonial points to two results: the grass gets nutrients, and the ground surface smooths out. Top dressing and overseeding are separate items on Colonial's list, and estimates are done in person, so the lawn is seen before anything is quoted.
Overseeding is the answer when a lawn looks thin. The technicians spread grass seed so the open spots can fill in.
Chapter 03
Sprinklers, pruning and a landscape refresh
Colonial designs and installs custom sprinkler systems so water reaches the lawn, the beds and the shrubs, and diagnoses problems quickly when a system stops working. Ongoing seasonal checks are a separate service.
Pruning gets the same treatment. Correct cuts, made at the right time of year, support structural growth, help prevent disease and avoid pest infestations. For a refresh, the crew lays sod, installs rock, and spreads bark or compost in the beds.
