The lawn care program: six applications, one route sheet

Fertilizer, pre and post-emergent weed control and grub protection on a schedule that runs from the first thaw to a mid-November feed.

Chapter 01

What a Yakima Valley lawn is up against

Dandelions and clover are the weeds everyone expects. Bindweed, the morning glory that threads through turf, plantain, mallow, goathead, oxalis and spurge are the ones that keep technicians busy through the summer. Crabgrass is the one Colonial tries to beat before it exists: pre-emergent goes down ahead of germination, which starts once the soil reaches 50 to 55 degrees.

Prevention matters because the seed bank is patient. An adult crabgrass plant can drop 10,000 seeds in a season, and goathead seed can sit in the soil for up to seven years. Grubs and other lawn-damaging insects work out of sight and can kill whole sections of grass before anyone notices, so the program treats for them ahead of the damage.

Six applications, mid-February to mid-November

The Premium program is six applications. The first goes down between mid-February and mid-March as the weather allows, and the last is a late-fall slow-release feed in mid-November. Timing can drift by about two weeks either way; the goal averages out to six weeks between visits. Pre-emergent goes on in the spring rounds, and post-emergent treatment handles whatever breaks through.

Premium also carries the insecticide components, six inspections by a licensed technician and the full warranty. Economy is the first four applications on the same schedule, ending in August. If a lawn is already fighting insects, Premium is the better buy, because a stand-alone insecticide treatment costs more than one lawn application.

Chapter 03

Price, notice and the days after a visit

Lawn care is priced in 1,000 square foot steps: $62 for the first 1,000, then $8.25 for each additional 1,000. Colonial prefers to estimate in person so the truck carries the right material the first time. A rough figure from satellite imagery is available, though the image may be out of date and miss what the lawn is going through.

You hear before the truck arrives, by text, email or phone call two business days ahead. Materials are EPA approved and safe for kids and pets once dry, and an emailed after-service summary gives the watering timeline for that season. Some weeds die within 72 hours and others take up to two weeks. If a patch looks wrong after that, call and a technician comes back.

The prepay discount arrives between November and January and is never required. Bermudagrass can be beaten, but it takes one to four years and fall reseeding.

Customer review, April 2026

“So great to work with, I had rescheduled my day to have spraying for weeds and fertilizer done as I was going to be out of town. My trip got canceled and Jacob was next door spraying, I told him about my plans being canceled, he called the office and they went a head and sprayed my lawn that day. Jacob was polite and completed his work in good time. Thank you Jacob!”
